This was the most challenging projects with Magis for Barber & Osgerby, probably because so many precedents have already been set for coat stands. Eugenio Perazza, founder of Magis, was insistent on creating a product that would feel contemporary yet maintain some reference to the classic archetype of a coat stand. This was to a be a no-nonsense product that could sit happily in any public space yet not feel out of place in a home. 25 different designs were made, using the hook first designed for Birds on a Wire as a starting point. Some were too elaborate, some too complex to manufacture, but eventually a shape was agreed on that was so simple it felt as though it had just happened by itself. The ‘leaves’ held coats very well and the arms served as a rail for coat hangers. The base, head and optional umbrella ring were die cast in aluminum and the pole extruded from aluminum so that the entire piece could have a natural polished finish.
