Halo and Hécate lamps

Year 2019
Client Hermès

These complementary designs explore the contrasting characteristics of two very different materials - the translucency of white porcelain and the intense opacity of black granite. The Halo Lamp balances a large shade on top of a narrow, cylindrical base, with both elements fabricated in Limoges porcelain and glazed to create a highly reflective gloss surface. When the lamp is turned on, an ambient halo of light radiates through the shade, revealing the thinness of the porcelain.

Smaller in scale, but drawing on the same archetypal form, the Hécate is machined from black granite so exceptionally dense the drilling process takes twelve hours, creating a honed finish that highlights the granular makeup of the stone. No light passes through the granite shade, instead a controlled circle of light pools around the lamp’s base. Both the Halo and the Hécate feature a leather cable in the signature orange of Hermès.
