The Jerwood exhibition

Year 2004
Client The Jerwood Applied Arts Prize for design

The Jerwood Applied Arts Prize for design was initiated in 1999 by the British Crafts Council, with funding from the Jerwood Charity. Each year’s shortlist focused on a different discipline: jewellery, ceramics, textiles, glass and furniture. At the time it was the most significant award in the fields of applied and decorative arts and given to the designer who, in the opinion of the judges, had made the biggest contribution to design in the previous seven years.

In 2004 Barber and Osgerby won the furniture prize, the second occasion on which the award had been made in this category. The studio was chosen unanimously, following rigorous consideration of a shortlist of five designers, for work that ‘combine[d] clarity, coherence and beauty’. Included in the finalists’ touring exhibition - curated by Ilka Schaumburg and initially installed at the Crafts Council in London - were early plywood pieces from Isokon Plus, upholstery from Cappellini and the first plastic products for Authentics.
