Hotaru paper lantern family

Year 2015
Manufacturer Ozeki & Co Ltd
Client Twentytwentyone

While travelling through Japan in 2012, Edward Barber visited the famous paper lantern manufacturer, Ozeki & Co, where lanterns have been made since 1891. A conversation with the owner of the family-run business sparked the beginning of the Hotaru project - hotaru meaning firefly -uses traditional methods of production to create contemporary forms.

The body of each lantern is fabricated from handmade mulberry bark washi paper, while the frame is crafted from locally harvested bamboo. Barber Osgerby’s two original designs - the sculptural Double Bubble and the maritime-influenced Buoy - were each produced in two sizes.

In 2016 a new lantern, Marker, was added to the range - marker being another name for the inflatable buoys used in marine navigation - with a limited edition of hand-painted Marker lanterns created in 2018.

In 2019 cast iron floor and table bases became the latest additions to the Hotaru collection.
