Shell table and chair

Year 2000
Manufacturer Isokon Plus

The Shell Table emerged from ongoing structural experimentation with folded materials, first seen in the Pilot Table (1999). Nominated for the Compasso d’Oro in 2004, the Shell Table references Marcel Breuer’s Isokon Dining Table from 1936. Both designs exhibit the same ability to self-level on an uneven floor owing to a unique top, which, although exceptionally strong, has the capacity to flex.

  • 1

Simply constructed from a moulded, laminated top and leg, the Shell Table is lightweight and has no mechanical fixings. Voids in the corners where the plywood overlaps the frame eliminate the need for complex, compound-curved junctions, while also adding a defining detail.

  • 4

Creating a paper-thin chair to accompany the table presented a number of challenges, not least in terms of comfort and strength. Again evolving from studies in folding, the finished design demonstrates physical and visual lightness, as well as an absence of mechanical fixings.
