Year 2018
Gallery Josée Bienvenu Gallery, New York

The ceramics, graphite drawings and watercolours shown at the Josée Bienvenu Gallery were inspired by a series of tests on clays and glazes undertaken by the designers in the course of developing a collection of tableware in 2015. Where the focus of industrial design tends to falls on control and perfection, with little space for serendipity, here was a way of working that was erratic, fast, expressive and exciting, because of the unpredictability of clay, especially when fused with glazes.

The tiles created for the exhibition used both black and terracotta bodied clay, with a natural colour palette of black, white and terracotta slips. The organic intensity of the tiles - produced by pouring liquid slip over the clay in a single motion - was counterpointed by the abstract quality of a series of graphite elevational drawings of the studio’s design work, presented in isolation.
