Year 2006
Client The Royal Institute of British Architects

An established London landmark, the headquarters of the RIBA were designed in 1934 by architect Grey Wornum. Strong Arts and Crafts influences run throughout the interior and exterior of the building, from the decorated bronze doors and sculpted figures at the entrance, to its etched glass screens and wooden panelling – all collaborations with notable artists and designers of the time.

In 2006 the RIBA approached the studio with a request for reconsideration of its entrance foyer, specifically the functionally compromised travertine reception desk, dating from the 1970s. Required was a technologically equipped, accessible replacement, seating two, that would embody the attention to detail, craftsmanship and gravitas of its context, whilst also registering as a contemporary insertion.

The sculptural volume that emerged from months of model-making is wrapped in a skin of hand-beaten stainless steel, mirror-polished to reflect its surroundings, allowing the finished piece to be both formally assertive and visually recessive.
