Olympic Torch 2012

Year 2012
Client LOCOG

The distinctive trilateral form of the 2012 Olympic Torch developed from a recognition of a pattern of trinities in the history of the Olympic Games - including the fact that the 2012 Games were the third to be held in London.

  • 241

The shape of the torch was designed to facilitate grip, as did its tactile perforated surface, the 8,000 laser-cut circles symbolising the 8,000 individuals who would carry the torch around the UK in the 70 days leading up to the opening ceremony. These circles also created transparency, allowing the carrier to see right to the heart of the flame. Functionally, the circles reduced the object’s overall weight and ensured that heat from its flame dissipated quickly, without being conducted down the handle.

  • 242

Crafted from an aluminium alloy originally developed for the aerospace and automotive industries, the torch was noteworthy for its lightness, tensile strength and heat resistance. To ensure it stayed alight in all conditions, testing was conducted in high altitudes, sub-zero temperatures and significant winds.

  • 243

The Olympic Torch is held in the permanent collections of the V&A, the Design Museum in London, the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland and in the private collection of the Royal College of Art, London.
